Superior Energy Resources, LLC (SER) is an authorized distributor of The Big Switch® biobased erosion/filtration medium by BEG Group, LLC. This product, made from switchgrass, is highly regarded for its effectiveness in environmentally sensitive projects managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (Pa DEP) and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). It has also been approved for use in West Virginia and Ohio.

What is a Biobased Product?

The FBig Switch Switchgrass Erosion Control Filtrationarm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002, as defined by the United States Secretary of Agriculture, states that a biobased product is "a commercial or industrial product (other than food or feed) that is, wholly or significantly, made from biological products or renewable domestic agricultural materials, including plant, animal, and marine materials or forestry products."

The Big Switch®/Phalanx Bio Switch® biobased erosion-filtration medium offers versatile applications critical for property protection and soil conservation against natural forces such as wind, water, and the effects of forest fires. Here are some of the primary uses of this product:

  • Erosion/Sediment Control: Reduces the displacement of soil due to water or wind, preserving the land's integrity.
  • Pollutant Removal: Effective in filtering out contaminants from runoff water, enhancing water quality.
  • Stormwater Management: Manages water flow and accumulation during heavy rainfall or storms to prevent flooding and waterlogging.
  • Habitat Pollinator Initiatives: Supports ecological projects aimed at creating or restoring habitats for pollinators.
  • Slip Repair: Stabilizes and repairs soil slips, preventing further erosion and property damage.

Switchgrass Applications

Construction and Development - EPA promulgated the Construction and Development Effluent Guidelines and Standards (40 CFR Part 450) in 2009 and amended the regulations in 2014 and 2015. The regulations cover stormwater discharges from construction sites and are implemented in NPDES permits.
Pipeline Construction and Development - Erosion/Filtration Medium are a common Best Management Practice (BMP) approach on linear pipeline projects especially along landowner property or where slopes are extremely long and steep.
Conservation Sediment and Erosion Control - Until a project site is stabilized, all erosion and sedimentation controls must be maintained properly. Maintenance should include inspections of all erosion and sedimentation controls on a weekly basis and after each runoff event. All preventative and remedial maintenance work should be performed immediately.
This biobased product offers an environmentally friendly solution to a variety of soil stability and water filtration challenges, making it a preferred choice for responsible environmental management.
